Historical view of long-span bridge aerodynamics
نویسنده
چکیده
Some features of bridge aerodynamics of wind engineering are reviewed at this time, in view of the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and also to celebrate Professor Alan G. Davenport’s 40 years of contribution to the field. Primary highlighted topics are: description of motion-dependent forces for flutter instability, presentation of gust responses caused by turbulent winds and suppression problems of wind-induced vibrations. r 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Advances in Modeling of Aerodynamic Forces on Bridge Decks
Aerodynamic forces on bridges are commonly separated into static, self-excited, and buffeting force components. By delving into the relationships among force descriptors for static, self-excited, and buffeting components, novel perspectives are developed to unveil the subtle underlying complexities in modeling aerodynamic forces. Formulations for airfoil sections and those based on quasisteady ...
متن کاملToward Better Understanding of Turbulence Effects on Bridge Aerodynamics
With the trend of variable cross-sections for long-span bridges from truss-stiffened to quasi-streamlined, and then to multiple-box cross-section geometries, the importance of aeroelastic performance is becoming increasingly significant in wind-resistant design. This article shows that there is clearly insufficient qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of turbulence effects on bridg...
متن کاملAeroelastic Analysis of Bridges: Effects of Turbulence and Aerodynamic Nonlinearities
Current linear aeroelastic analysis approaches are not suited for capturing the emerging concerns in bridge aerodynamics introduced by aerodynamic nonlinearities and turbulence effects. These issues may become critical for bridges with increasing spans and/or with aerodynamic characteristics sensitive to the effective angle of incidence. This paper presents a nonlinear aerodynamic force model a...
متن کاملNonlinear Aerodynamic Analysis of Bridges under Turbulent Winds: the New Frontier in Bridge Aerodynamics
Traditionally, the estimation of wind induced buffeting response and analysis of flutter instability have been conducted in the frequency domain utilizing linear approaches. These approaches are limited to linear structures in which nonlinearities in aerodynamic forces are ignored. In this study, a time domain analysis framework for predicting the flutter and buffeting responses of bridges unde...
متن کاملIndirect frequency measurement of cable-stayed bridges in cross winds
In conventional bridge health monitoring, a number of sensors are deployed on a bridge directly for detecting its various dynamic properties. This is so called “direct method”. But the drawbacks of the direct method are: laborious deployment of sensors, time-consuming, and not portable. Following the previous Yang’s works (2004) in indirect method by using a passing test vehicle as a message re...
